Moghalu: Correcting Africa’s Map Will Not Deliver Prosperity Without a Plan

Former CBN Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu has welcomed the UN-backed push for maps that show Africa’s true size more accurately. He said equal-area projections can correct the long-standing distortion that makes Africa appear smaller than it is. Moghalu noted that Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, despite how similarly sized they can look on the traditional Mercator map. He said the resolution does not redraw borders or prohibit Mercator maps for navigation. He argued, however, that a fairer map alone cannot transform African economies. According to him, prosperity requires productive economies, quality education, strong institutions, good governance, industrialisation and long-term planning. He urged African leaders and citizens to see the map correction as a chance to rethink the continent’s potential, while focusing on the practical work needed for development.
