Lagos Orders Schools to Enforce Hygiene Standards as 2026/2027 Session Begins

The Lagos State Government has directed public and private schools to prioritise safety, cleanliness and healthy practices as pupils, students and staff return on Monday, September 14, for the 2026/2027 academic session. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, said schools must provide safe, clean, inclusive and conducive learning environments. He urged learners to keep classrooms, toilets, laboratories and playgrounds clean, wash their hands regularly, dispose of waste properly and avoid sharing personal items such as cups, cutlery and towels. Schools were also advised to prevent unnecessary overcrowding, maintain good ventilation and ensure that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities are functional. Teachers, administrators and other staff are expected to lead by example and promptly address unsafe conditions, damaged facilities and health concerns.
