Nollywood Needs Honest Critics, Not Endless Applause, to Grow

Critics should understand Nollywood's budget realities and history, while still asking hard questions about repetitive plots, weak technical standards and unambitious storytelling. As Nigerian films reach wider audiences through global streaming platforms, the industry cannot rely on goodwill from viewers at home. Fans and media outlets should make room for fair, independent reviews instead of treating every negative opinion as betrayal. Nollywood should celebrate its progress, but it must also welcome honest analysis. A culture that values thoughtful critique alongside praise can help Nigerian cinema earn lasting global respect.
