Biblical Conquest Texts and the Question of Divine Violence
I struggle with biblical passages that describe God promising land already occupied by other peoples and ordering Israel to drive them out or destroy them. Genesis 15, Exodus 23, Deuteronomy 7, Deuteronomy 9, Deuteronomy 20 and Joshua 3 name several Canaanite groups and describe their removal from the land. Some passages also say no covenant or mercy should be shown to them. How should believers reconcile these texts with the belief that God is merciful and just? I am interested in serious theological responses to the moral questions these passages raise.
