Italy Plans School Ban on Niqabs and Burqas, Meloni Says

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says her government will present measures to ban burqas and niqabs in schools and set limits on the number of foreign students in each class. The proposal would also require parents of foreign students who face serious integration difficulties to learn Italian. Italy already has rules limiting foreign students to 30% of a class, with exceptions based on language ability. Italian law does not expressly ban full-face veils in schools or public places. However, garments that prevent identification can be restricted unless there is a justified reason, including religious or cultural practice.
