Israeli Settlers Enter Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound, Sparking New Tensions
Dozens of Israeli settlers supported by police entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem on Thursday. Their presence has ignited fresh concern as tensions remain high in the occupied territory. The holy site was reopened to Muslim worshippers last month after a 40-day closure during the Iran war. Palestinians have since resumed prayers, but recent settler entry drew sharp criticism from Palestinian leaders and Muslim states. Local reports say some settlers performed provocative rituals near the Dome of the Rock. The compound is officially managed by Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf, yet disputes over control and access continue. On Sunday, Israel’s national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the compound and called for expanded Jewish access. His repeated entries since taking office in 2023 have fueled widespread unrest.
