Lagos Launches Ojota Toilet That Converts Human Waste Into Biogas

The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy has launched a waste-to-energy sanitation project at Ojota Bus Stop to help curb open defecation in Lagos. The upgraded public toilet uses a 30-cubic-metre biodigester to convert human waste into biogas. The facility is designed to serve at least 350 users daily. It is expected to reduce pollution, improve hygiene and cut the need for frequent septic-tank evacuation. The remaining effluent will pass through a filtration system before disposal. Biogas from the project will be supplied free to women food vendors around Ojota, reducing their dependence on charcoal and other fuels. Future phases may convert the gas to electricity for the toilet facility and nearby public infrastructure. The academy says the Ojota project is a pilot model that could be replicated at public sanitation facilities across Lagos.
