Do We Owe God, Religion or Anyone Gratitude for Being Alive?
I do not believe anyone is under a cosmic or moral obligation to be grateful simply for being alive. Nobody asked to be born, and gratitude should be a personal emotion rather than a debt imposed by God, religion or society. Life is rare, fragile and temporary. Our existence depends on a long chain of biological and historical events that could easily have happened differently. That can make life worth appreciating, but appreciation should be a choice, especially for people facing hardship. I believe morality does not belong exclusively to religion. People can choose empathy, compassion, responsibility and respect for others without surrendering their minds to an authority figure or an ancient text. Question what you were taught, test ideas and live deliberately. Build meaningful relationships, pursue knowledge, help others where you can and make the life you have your own.
