US Engineer Recorded Allegedly Poisoning Colleague’s Water Bottle With Cadmium
A California chemical engineer, David Xu, pleaded no contest to poisoning his colleague, Rong Yuan, after hidden-camera footage allegedly showed him putting cadmium into her water bottle at their workplace. Yuan said she suffered vomiting, hair loss and a persistent sour taste in her mouth over about 18 months. Suspecting that someone was tampering with her food and drinks, she installed a camera. She later gave the footage to police, leading to Xu’s arrest in 2019. Attempted murder charges were later dropped under a plea deal. Xu received two years’ probation and was ordered to pay $7,058 in restitution. Having completed probation, he is now seeking to have the felony conviction dismissed under California law.
