Nigerian Man Says Racism in Germany Pushed Him to Move to the UK
A Nigerian man who grew up in Germany shares how racism shaped his childhood and made him eager to leave as early as age eight. He says the experience followed him through school, government offices, and everyday life, and that moving to the UK gave him more peace and opportunity. In the interview, he recalls being the only Black child in his primary school class and says a teacher wrongly recommended him for the lowest secondary school track. He also describes how language barriers made him help his parents with official letters and public offices while growing up. Now in London, he is studying Computer Science and working two jobs, including as an au pair. He says the UK has been better for him overall, though he still faces occasional racism and hopes to move to Nigeria someday if the country’s politics improve.
