Makurdi Businesswoman Remanded Over Alleged Trafficking of Two Escaped Girls
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi has ordered that businesswoman Ruth Tarhemba be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Service. She faces charges of criminal conspiracy and human trafficking for allegedly recruiting two girls into prostitution. The case emerged after the two victims escaped from traffickers in Burkina Faso and reported their ordeal to the gender unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi. During Monday’s mention, the court did not take her plea due to a jurisdiction issue. Chief Magistrate Regina Alashi adjourned the matter until July 20, 2026, for further mention. The alleged offences violate sections 97 and 282 of the Benue Penal Code Laws of 2004.
