China Rejects Anthropic CEO’s Call to Restrict Its AI Development
China has rejected Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for the United States to curb Beijing’s access to advanced artificial-intelligence chips and chipmaking equipment. Beijing said fearmongering, confrontation and intense competition could damage global efforts to govern AI. Amodei warned that China gaining a lead in AI could pose serious risks to the United States and the wider world. He argued that international efforts to slow frontier AI development would require China’s participation, while also supporting continued US restrictions on advanced technology exports. The dispute comes ahead of an expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where AI governance may be discussed. Both countries are seeking to avoid dependence on the other for critical AI capabilities. China says it supports a global AI-governance framework that includes countries in the Global South. US security agencies have meanwhile accused Chinese developers of trying to extract capabilities from leading American AI models, an allegation Beijing has rejected.
