Are Chants Biblical? A Christian View of Repetition and Worship
The Bible shows that repeated words and sounds can have a place in worship. Scripture records repeated praise such as “Holy, holy, holy,” “Hosanna,” and “Alleluia.” Jesus also prayed the same words repeatedly in Gethsemane, while the blind man continued calling on Him for mercy. The key issue is not repetition itself, but its purpose. Biblical worship should focus the heart on God, exalt Christ, and be rooted in faith and Scripture. Music also has a place in worship, as seen when Elisha called for a minstrel before receiving from God. However, chants should not be treated as magic or used to manipulate spiritual forces. Empty repetition, attempts to summon spirits, or practices disconnected from Christ cross a different line. The instrument or sound is not the main issue; the purpose and spiritual foundation behind it matter.
