Lagos Sanitation Saturdays: A Small Sacrifice for a Cleaner City
I first saw a TikTok video by an IJGB lady warning that Lagos had become too dirty for Detty December. Her sharp English and prominent nose struck a chord. The video went viral, with thousands agreeing that our city’s filth had reached a tipping point. Governor Sanwo-Olu plans to bring back the monthly state-wide environmental sanitation exercise. Critics cite court orders and the N256 billion environmental budget. But budgets alone won’t clear drains or wash our pots. We cannot rely only on laws and allocations. We Lagosians must play our part. Two hours every last Saturday of the month is a small price to pay. Proper exemptions and humane enforcement can protect emergencies and services. Let’s support this clean-up and prove that Lagos still deserves its title as the Centre of Excellence.
