At 66, the Nigeria We Want Must Begin With Us
As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, we should reflect on the values we practise and reward. We often blame leaders for corruption, insecurity and poor governance, but leaders come from the same homes, workplaces and communities as the rest of us. We must stop celebrating wealth and influence gained through questionable means. We should honour integrity, competence, service, innovation and people who protect public resources. A public official who refuses to steal or misuse power deserves encouragement, not ridicule. Our choices matter. We should support ethical businesses, job creators, responsible citizens and policies that benefit Nigerians. If we want honest leaders tomorrow, we must become citizens who value honesty, accountability and the public good today. Nigeria is not only its government. Nigeria is us. Let us change what we celebrate, reward and tolerate, and put people, values and long-term national development ahead of personal gain.
