Ogun Court Jails Dealer for Selling Counterfeit Electrical Cables
A Magistrate Court in the Ojodu Abiodun Magisterial District of Ogun State has sentenced a businessman to imprisonment with hard labour, without an option of fine, for selling counterfeit electrical cables bearing Coleman labels. The court heard that 317 coils of cables were recovered from him. Tests and physical comparisons found that the products did not originate from the manufacturer. One cable labelled as 2kg reportedly weighed 1.2kg, while a genuine sample weighed 2kg. The prosecution said the counterfeit cables had differences in copper content and other safety features. The court held that the evidence established the offences and warned that substandard cables could cause sparks, fires and electrocution. The manufacturer welcomed the conviction and called for stronger enforcement against cable counterfeiters. The supplier should also be investigated and held accountable if found culpable.
