NAFDAC Boss Defends Her Record as Nigerians Raise Alarm Over Fake Products
NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye has defended her record amid public concern over counterfeit food, medicines and household products in Nigerian markets. Adeyeye cited laboratory upgrades, staff training and improvements to drug-registration processes since she took office in 2017. However, critics say fake and substandard products remain widespread, while the agency’s target of reducing substandard medicines to 5% or less by 2025 has not been independently measured. The agency has also blamed staff shortages, weak border enforcement, supply-chain gaps and limited recruitment control for difficulties in policing counterfeit goods. The debate is whether these systemic constraints excuse NAFDAC’s performance or whether the agency should be held more accountable for the risks consumers still face.
