Simeone Apologises to Lookman After Playing Him Out of Position for Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has apologised to Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman for using him as a makeshift centre-forward in the opening matches of the 2026/27 La Liga season. Lookman started in Atletico's win over Malaga and the 2-2 draw with Villarreal, but struggled to make his usual impact in the central role. Simeone said the Nigerian was asked to fill in because Alexander Sørloth is injured and Julián Álvarez is still returning to full fitness. The coach praised Lookman's work rate but admitted the role has limited his ability to dribble, take on defenders and score. Simeone said he intends to return Lookman to his preferred position when more natural strikers are available. Álvarez returned to the squad against Villarreal amid reports linking him with a move away from Atletico Madrid, where he was booed by some home supporters.
