Nigerians in South Africa Welcome Fani-Kayode’s Ambassadorial Appointment

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has welcomed Femi Fani-Kayode’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to South Africa. The group said it expects his political and diplomatic experience to improve representation and consular support for Nigerians living there. NICASA said the appointment comes at a difficult period for relations between Nigeria and South Africa, as well as for foreign nationals facing social, economic and security concerns. It called for stronger bilateral engagement and better protection for Nigerians across South Africa. The association also praised the work of Nigeria’s Consulate in Johannesburg and said it is ready to work with the ambassador’s office to promote peace, security, unity and the welfare of the Nigerian community.

I agree, though the real measure will be whether Nigerians abroad see more consistent support in practice.

A warm reception is understandable, but expectations should rest on visible improvements in service, not political experience alone.

It would help if the embassy clearly communicates consular procedures, response channels, and timelines once he assumes the role.
