Peter Obi Alleges Institutional Decline in Nigeria’s Electoral System

Peter Obi has criticised Nigeria’s electoral and judicial institutions, alleging that professors, lawmakers, senior lawyers and religious leaders are contributing to a broader crisis of accountability. Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Obi compared his past court victory with what he described as a decline in institutional standards. He alleged that some professors now help politicians rig elections and that senior lawyers defend cases involving forgery. He also criticised lawmakers over electoral provisions and accused some judges of openly aligning with political interests. Obi said Nigeria must reverse the institutional decline to protect its democracy.
