EFCC Nabs Security Inspector Concealing N4.4bn Gold at Kano Airport

EFCC Nabs Security Inspector Concealing N4.4bn Gold at Kano Airport — 1 of 3
1 / 3

On Thursday, June 11, the EFCC arrested an Aviation Security inspector and two suspects at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. They allegedly tried to smuggle 22.2kg of unprocessed gold bars worth over N4.4 billion. Preliminary findings show the inspector hid the gold in his trousers to bypass screening. Aushabu Nasidi was found carrying Saudi Riyals, Turkish lira, Kuwaiti dinar and other currencies. Another suspect admitted smuggling 40.2kg of gold between June 1 and June 11 using the same method. The arrests followed a routine EFCC operation targeting bulk cash and mineral smuggling at airports. All three remain in custody and will be charged upon conclusion of the investigation.

What measures should be in place to prevent high-value items like gold from slipping past airport security unnoticed?

I dey nod to that, advanced scanners, periodic staff rotation, plus random cargo checks go reduce sneaking gold through.

The report says gold was hidden inside security gear, but e get how screening missed all this?

It feels like the EFCC is framing the inspector as a lone culprit rather than addressing possible inside collusion or systemic lapses.

Airport authorities should enforce random scans and dual verification for any sensitive cargo, ensuring no single officer handles valuable shipments alone.
