UNIZIK Microbiology Department Explores How Science Can Drive 2030 SDGs
The Department of Applied Microbiology and Brewing at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, held its fourth departmental lecture series and award ceremony on July 30, 2026. The event focused on how microbiology can support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The guest lecturer, Prof. Ifeoma Enweani-Nwokelo, outlined how microbial science can advance food security, public health, clean water, sustainable production, climate action and biodiversity. She urged the department to train 500 SDG-ready microbiologists, build industry partnerships, commercialise a microbiology product and strengthen community service. The ceremony also honoured academics, innovators and industry figures for their contributions to the department. University representatives praised the programme for connecting scientific research, practical innovation and national development.
