Tinubu’s Presidency and Nigeria’s Deepening Political Crisis

Nigeria was already in a difficult state before President Tinubu took office. Since 1999, successive governments have failed to deliver accountable governance or address concerns about the legitimacy and structure of the 1999 Constitution. Political leaders have protected a system that benefits a small elite while ordinary Nigerians bear the cost. The result is an economy marked by rising prices, widespread insecurity, corruption and weak public institutions. Many Nigerians feel that institutions meant to act independently have been captured by political interests, while public resources continue to be mismanaged. Tinubu’s presidency is viewed as the culmination of years of political greed, injustice, tribalism and poor leadership. Continued economic hardship and policies seen as anti-people could deepen public anger and further damage national unity. Nigeria needs constitutional reform, accountable leadership and policies that put the welfare and security of citizens first. Without meaningful change, the country risks a deeper social, economic and political breakdown.
