UNIZIK Lecturer Controversy: Why Professional Boundaries Matter
The controversy involving Professor Ifeanyi Odinye and student Favour Okechukwu has renewed discussion about ethics, power and professional boundaries in Nigerian universities. The allegations should be handled through the institution’s proper investigative and disciplinary processes. For me, the key lesson is that lecturers and other workplace leaders must never allow personal or sexual interests to influence how they handle misconduct or disciplinary matters. Rules should be applied fairly, documented properly and reported to the appropriate authorities. I have worked in an environment with many female staff, and I believe professionalism protected both me and the institution. Workplace relationships involving unequal power can create serious ethical risks, reputational damage and opportunities for coercion or blackmail. Men and women alike should maintain clear boundaries at work. Professional conduct, accountability and respect are safer than trading institutional ethics for personal interests.
