Christ’s Public Triumph Over the Powers of Darkness
A king’s battle is never without witnesses. In ancient empires, rulers displayed victory openly so that everyone could see who held authority and what happened to those who opposed the throne. This is how I understand Christ’s victory. Scripture says that Jesus spoiled principalities and powers, making a public show of them. His death, descent and resurrection were not hidden events. They revealed His authority over every power of darkness. Ephesians teaches that He descended before He ascended, leading captivity captive. Isaiah also speaks of captives being delivered from the mighty. I believe these passages show that Christ contended with the enemy, rescued those held in captivity and triumphed openly before witnesses. Jesus later declared that all power in heaven and on earth had been given to Him. Through Him, we are authorised to walk in His authority over every power of the enemy. Jesus is Lord.
