Can NolliStream’s Free, Mobile-First Model Succeed Where Showmax and IROKOtv Struggled?

Can NolliStream’s Free, Mobile-First Model Succeed Where Showmax and IROKOtv Struggled? — 1 of 2
1 / 2

NolliStream is testing whether a free, advertising-funded and mobile-first model can succeed in Nigeria where subscription streaming platforms have struggled. The Lagos-based service offers offline downloads, low-data streaming and partnerships aimed at improving viewing on weaker mobile networks. Its launch follows the closure of IROKOtv and Showmax’s exit from Africa after sustained losses. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have also reduced spending on Nigerian originals, leaving fewer large-scale opportunities for Nollywood producers. NolliStream hopes to earn from advertising and diaspora audiences rather than monthly subscriptions. Its upcoming original drama, Blood and Secrets, will be an early test of whether the platform can attract viewers, protect films from piracy and build a sustainable business for Nigerian filmmakers.
