CEPI Commits $4.17m to Test Ebola Vaccines Against Bundibugyo Virus

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has committed $4.17 million to four studies examining whether existing Ebola vaccines can protect against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus. The research will analyse stored blood samples from thousands of people previously vaccinated against the Zaire ebolavirus. It comes as the Bundibugyo virus drives an escalating outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There is no licensed vaccine specifically for Bundibugyo virus. The studies will assess whether vaccines such as Ervebo produce cross-protective immune responses and help authorities make faster decisions on emergency vaccine deployment. The grants will support research teams at UCLA, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, the University of Oxford and the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. Initial antibody findings from one project are expected within two to six months.
