Did You Know Frankincense Grows in Nigeria?
Frankincense is the aromatic resin obtained from Boswellia trees. It looks like hardened sap and is often burned as incense. It is also remembered by many Christians as one of the gifts presented to baby Jesus by the Magi. Nigeria has a native frankincense species, Boswellia dalzielii, found mainly in parts of the North-East. It is known locally by names including Hano, Harrabi and Lubaan. The resin is traditionally chewed, used in local remedies and burned during cultural and spiritual practices. I find its business potential especially interesting. With sustainable harvesting, quality control and local processing, frankincense could support Nigerian-made incense, essential oils, fragrances, skincare and wellness products.
