Algeria to Introduce English Before French in Primary Schools From 2026

Algeria will introduce English from the third year of primary school beginning in the 2026–2027 academic session. French will remain in the curriculum but will start a year later, from the fourth year. The Ministry of National Education says the policy will strengthen pupils’ preparation for science, technology, the economy and international communication. It also aligns with the country’s education law, which requires pupils to study at least two foreign languages. The change has sparked debate among French-speaking communities.
