Ukraine Challenges IOC Decision to Reinstate Russia at Sports Court
Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee has taken the International Olympic Committee to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over its decision to provisionally reinstate Russia. The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in 2023 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On July 7, 2026, it lifted the suspension, saying the grounds for the ban no longer applied. The move could allow Russian athletes to compete under their national flag at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Ukraine argues that Russia has not addressed the violations that led to its suspension, including the inclusion of sports bodies from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. It warns that restoring Russia’s Olympic rights without resolving those issues could set a damaging precedent. Russian and Belarusian competitors appeared as neutral athletes at Paris 2024 and the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Russia remains suspended from FIFA competitions, while World Athletics has maintained its restrictions on Belarusian athletes and teams.
