Lagos Wealth Fund Explained: What Hamzat’s Proposal Could Mean for Residents
The proposed Lagos State Wealth Fund is designed to save and invest public resources for infrastructure, economic stability, strategic growth and future generations. It is not a personal savings scheme or a direct cash-payment programme for residents. The proposal includes four investment windows: infrastructure financing, economic diversification, economic stabilisation and long-term savings. During a 2025 public hearing, officials projected annual savings of about ₦30 billion, although this was a projection rather than money already deposited into a fund. The bill has passed through public hearings, stakeholder consultations and legislative consideration. However, the available updates do not confirm that it has received final passage and gubernatorial assent, or that the fund is already operational. Hamzat has said the fund should have an independent board and published accounts. Its success would depend on clear laws, transparent management, reliable funding and investments that deliver real benefits for Lagos residents.
