Osun Account Freeze Raises Fears Over Democracy and the 2027 Elections

I am not surprised by reports that Osun State Government accounts have been frozen. To me, this reflects a wider pattern in which state power is used to weaken political opponents, much like what I believe happened during the Rivers State crisis. I fear the situation could shape the coming Osun governorship election and the wider preparations for the 2027 presidential election. Nigeria no longer appears to have sufficiently independent institutions to protect democratic competition or hold those in power accountable. I have repeatedly argued that Nigerians should look beyond elections alone. I believe the 1999 Constitution has failed to provide justice, accountability and genuine federalism. In my view, a referendum on regional autonomy or restructuring is necessary. Nigerians, especially Southerners, must decide whether they want future generations to inherit the same system of political exclusion, corruption and impunity.
