Johnson & Johnson Agrees to $5.5bn Settlement in Talc Cancer Lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to settle about 69,000 lawsuits in the United States alleging that its discontinued talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer. The proposed settlement covers 99.75 percent of the company’s outstanding talc-related cases in US federal and state courts. It will become final only if at least 95 percent of eligible claimants accept it. J&J continues to deny that talc causes cancer. However, it stopped selling talc-based baby powder in the US in 2020 and globally in 2023. The agreement does not cover a separate UK case involving more than 7,000 potential claimants.

A settlement is significant, but it should not be treated as a simple answer to every allegation or every individual case.
