African Tobacco Control Advocates Hold Industry Monitoring Training in Lagos
Public health advocates from 12 African countries have gathered in Lagos for a five-day training on monitoring tobacco industry interference in health policy. The programme is being hosted in Nigeria for the first time by the Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research. Participants include government officials, researchers, journalists, economists and civil society advocates from Nigeria, Kenya, Benin, Botswana, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal and Zimbabwe. Facilitators said the training will help participants identify industry tactics, examine tobacco-related documents, recognise front groups and produce evidence for stronger tobacco-control policies. The programme also focuses on protecting young people from misleading marketing and enforcing tobacco-control laws in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
