How Blockchain Networks Agree: A Simple Guide to Consensus Mechanisms

A consensus mechanism is the set of rules that allows computers on a blockchain to agree on valid transactions without relying on a central bank, company or administrator. It helps prevent double spending and ensures that participants share the same record of transactions. The process usually involves broadcasting a transaction, checking that it follows the network’s rules, adding valid transactions to a proposed block, and allowing the network to confirm that block. Once accepted, nodes update their copies of the blockchain. Proof of Work and Proof of Stake are the best-known approaches. Proof of Work, used by Bitcoin, relies on computing power, while Proof of Stake, used by Ethereum, relies on validators who commit assets as collateral. Each system makes trade-offs between security, speed, fees, energy use and decentralization. Understanding consensus helps crypto users assess blockchain projects beyond marketing claims. It shows who can validate transactions, how attacks are discouraged, and why different networks may have very different costs, confirmation times and security models.
