Human Bites Can Cause Serious Infections: What to Do Immediately
A human bite that breaks the skin can introduce bacteria into the wound and lead to infection. Bites on the hands, fingers, knuckles or near joints need particular attention because damage can extend deeper than the wound appears. Wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water, apply gentle pressure to control bleeding, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not put bleach, soil, herbal mixtures or other irritating substances on the wound. Seek medical care promptly if the skin is broken, especially if the bite is deep, on the hand or face, or near a joint. Go urgently if there is worsening pain, swelling, redness, pus, fever, numbness, red streaks or difficulty moving the affected limb. A clinician can assess whether you need antibiotics, a tetanus booster, or preventive treatment after possible exposure to infections such as hepatitis B or HIV.
