70-Year-Old Man Seeks Divorce After Wife’s Public Humiliation and Violence
I’m a 70-year-old man, Ahmed Babalola, and I’ve asked the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan to dissolve my 30-year marriage. I say my wife, Aduke, has become violent, destructive and constantly insults my sexual performance in front of neighbours and relatives. She once tore the clothes I had made for my 70th birthday and destroyed my cake. I now live in fear, sleeping with one eye open after she threatened to harm me and even drew a knife on me during fights. I reported her to the police, but she bragged she would do worse. I can no longer tolerate the humiliation and threats to my life. Aduke has consented to the divorce but wants me to provide for our children’s feeding, education and healthcare. The court has adjourned the case until May 6 for her defence.
