Document Shows Benue Police Were Notified Before Peter Obi’s Disrupted Visit
A letter acknowledged by the Benue State Police Command indicates that the Nigeria Democratic Congress notified the police before its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited the state on September 8, 2026. Obi’s trip to Makurdi and Yelwata was disrupted after suspected political thugs reportedly blocked his convoy. The visit was intended to include a meeting with relatives and representatives of victims of the 2025 Yelwata massacre, as well as a brief wreath-laying at a memorial site. The development contradicts an earlier suggestion by the Benue State Government that security arrangements were not made because officials were unaware of the visit. The police officer who acknowledged the letter reportedly confirmed that the command received the notification and provided security cover. However, the letter was addressed to the Commissioner of Police, and there is no confirmation that the governor or other state officials received separate notice.
