Over 200 Attend Free Cancer Screening at COOUTH, Awka on Opening Day
More than 200 residents attended the first day of a free cancer screening programme at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka. The five-day programme runs from July 27 to 31, 2026. It provides free Pap smear tests for cervical cancer, mammography for breast cancer detection, and prostate cancer screening. Hospital officials said 54 men and more than 88 women had been screened by early afternoon on the opening day. COOUTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, said the turnout exceeded expectations despite early morning rainfall. The hospital initially planned to screen about 500 people throughout the programme, but deployed more staff and ordered extra consumables after the large first-day turnout. The exercise was organised to mark the birthdays of Anambra Governor Charles Soludo and his wife, Nonye Soludo. Beneficiaries said the free service offered a rare chance to access cancer screening, as the cost often prevents many residents from seeking care early.
