Senegal’s 45-Year-Old President Bassirou Faye Elected ECOWAS Chairman

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was chosen on Sunday as the new Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during the 69th Ordinary Session in Freetown, Sierra Leone. At 45, Faye is one of Africa’s youngest leaders. A former tax inspector, he won office earlier this year on a reformist, anti-establishment platform. His tenure in Dakar has focused on anti-corruption measures, economic diversification and stronger public institutions. As ECOWAS chairman, Faye will steer regional efforts to tackle terrorism and political instability. He is expected to deepen economic integration, promote democratic governance and foster dialogue with member states, including those recently withdrawn from the bloc. His leadership comes at a critical moment for West Africa as ECOWAS seeks to rebuild unity and address evolving security and economic challenges.
