Bauchi Declares Cholera Outbreak as 16 Die, 398 Suspected Cases Recorded

Bauchi State has officially declared a cholera outbreak after recording 398 suspected cases and 16 deaths as of 31 July 2026. The cases were reported across 13 local government areas, according to a Ministry of Health and Social Welfare memo. Toro is the worst-hit LGA with 231 cases, followed by Alkaleri and Kirfi with 46 cases each. Ganjuwa recorded 21 cases, while Bauchi and Tafawa Balewa LGAs recorded 14 cases each. The reported case fatality rate is 4%. The state, through RUWASSA and UNICEF, has trained WASH desk officers from eight high-risk LGAs on targeted cholera response. Residents are being urged to use safe drinking water, maintain proper sanitation, avoid open defecation and wash their hands at critical times to reduce transmission. Health officials stressed that protecting children requires clean water, improved toilets and consistent hygiene practices, especially during the rainy season when waterborne diseases spread more easily.
