Nigerian filmmaker Kaelo Iyizoba’s short film, ‘The Spectacular Death of Prisca’, has received an Honourable Mention in the Best International Short Film category at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The recognition is reported to be the first jury honour for a Nigerian film in TIFF’s 51-year history. The film was the only African title listed among the festival’s award recipients and runners-up. Starring and executive produced by Rita Dominic, alongside Genoveva Umeh, Fae Olumide and Shamz Garuba, the film follows an overprotective mother on a surreal mission to rescue her daughter on her wedding day. Its story draws on the bold melodrama, twists and visual energy associated with classic Nollywood. The TIFF Short Cuts jury praised the film’s blend of melodrama, action and comedy, as well as its confident performances and distinctive tone. It was selected from 294 films presented from 72 countries.
