Boxer Joana Nwamerue Uses Boxing to Help Young Offenders Rebuild Their Lives
US-based professional boxer Joana Nwamerue says she is committed to helping young people redirect anger and street violence into boxing and other sports. Ahead of her bout against Jaica Green in Atlantic City, she said sport can teach discipline, self-control and a better way to handle conflict. Nwamerue, who has Nigerian and Bulgarian roots, works with young inmates in Bulgaria through boxing activities organised with the Ministry of Justice. Minor offenders with good behaviour are allowed to compete in supervised tournaments, receive gifts and, in some cases, spend time with their families. She said the goal is not simply to win fights but to help participants recognise their potential and build a life away from crime, drugs and violence. Nwamerue urged young people to work hard for their goals, insisting that determination can turn difficult circumstances into opportunity.
