My Wife Survived a Gas Explosion: How RSUTH Changed My View of Public Hospitals
On 14 February 2026, my wife suffered severe burns after a gas explosion in our kitchen. The fire spread through our home, but neighbours rushed in to fight the flames, rescue our children and nanny, and help save my wife. Two private hospitals turned us away. Although I had always doubted government-owned hospitals, we eventually took her to Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. The emergency team attended to her immediately, placed her on oxygen and worked urgently to stabilise her without delaying treatment over payment. Watching the doctors and nurses fight for my wife’s life changed my perception of public hospitals. I remain grateful to God, our neighbours, loved ones and the RSUTH medical team for giving my family hope during one of the most frightening moments of our lives.
