Eye Specialists Warn Parents Against Delaying Cataract Treatment for Children
Eye specialists have urged parents to seek prompt medical care for children with vision problems, warning that delayed cataract treatment can lead to permanent visual impairment. The warning followed the case of a seven-year-old girl who received free cataract surgery during a medical outreach in Edo State. The programme has provided surgery to hundreds of patients at Edo Specialist Hospital in Benin City and in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Doctors explained that cataracts can affect children from birth or develop early in life. Unlike adults who may regain sight after surgery, children whose vision does not develop properly risk lasting damage to the brain's visual centre. Residents, especially in rural and riverine communities, were advised to avoid traditional remedies and seek specialist care early. The procedure replaces the cloudy lens with an artificial one and can restore sight for many patients.
