World Bank Projects Luanda Could Overtake Lagos as Sub-Saharan Africa’s Largest City by 2050
A World Bank report projects that Luanda’s population could rise from 11.4 million in 2025 to 20.3 million by 2050, putting Angola’s capital ahead of Lagos as the region’s most populous city. Lagos is projected to grow from 12.8 million to 16.2 million over the same period. The report says sub-Saharan Africa’s urban population could reach 1.7 billion by 2050, adding about 748 million people. It warns that rapid growth will bring greater pressure on housing, transport, infrastructure and jobs. The World Bank says investment in affordable homes, transport and better urban planning will help determine whether cities such as Lagos and Luanda can turn that growth into economic opportunity.
