How England’s Football Reserve Leagues Are Structured
England’s reserve-team football structure was built around the Premier Reserve League, founded in 1999. It had northern and southern divisions, each featuring 10 professional clubs’ reserve sides. Below it were the Central League, mainly serving clubs in the Midlands and North, and the Football Combination for clubs in southern England and Wales. Both competitions were divided into regional sections and also held cup tournaments. Reserve leagues did not use normal promotion and relegation. When a club’s first team moved between the Premier League and Championship, its reserve side would leave or enter the Premier Reserve League accordingly. At lower levels, reserve teams could also compete in local reserve competitions or occasionally against senior first teams.
