NMA Appoints Okwuonu to Lead Organ Transplant Regulation Committee

The Nigerian Medical Association has appointed Dr Chimezie Okwuonu, Chief Medical Director of the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia, to chair its National Committee on Organ Transplantation Regulation for 2026 to 2028. The committee will propose a national regulatory framework for organ donation and transplantation. Its work includes reviewing existing laws and ethical standards, setting requirements for licensing and monitoring transplant centres, and improving informed consent, confidentiality and protection for donors and recipients. It will also recommend measures to prevent organ trafficking and commercialisation, promote ethical organ donation, improve access and affordability of transplant care, and establish standards for training, data collection and outcome monitoring. Okwuonu is a consultant physician and nephrologist with experience in kidney disease, dialysis and kidney transplantation.
