Atiku’s Comeback: Can He Dethrone Tinubu in 2027?
Nigeria’s politics rarely see a candidate return as often as Atiku Abubakar. Since 1993 he has contested six presidential elections. After surviving three rival factions, multiple court cases and a Supreme Court showdown, he is on track for 2027. The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed the David Mark-led ADC’s leadership. The party filed 471 candidates, including Atiku with Rotimi Amaechi as running mate. Yet a live appeal still hangs over their recognition. Atiku won his primary with 1.8 million votes, driven by near-total mobilisation in Sokoto and Zamfara. Key northern power brokers who built the APC machine have defected. Amaechi’s influence in the South-South could swing tight margins there. Their strategy can focus on converting Buhari’s legacy vote in the North and reclaiming thin 2023 margins in the South-South. The question remains: will that be enough to unseat President Tinubu?
