Why Family Lineage Matters Before Marriage in Some Igbo Communities
In some Igbo communities, marriage between people linked through a mother’s or grandmother’s lineage is forbidden because of ancestral ties. Some neighbouring communities may also be treated as relatives, even when the connection is not obvious to younger people. This can be difficult because people may begin a relationship without knowing their full family histories. Older relatives who understand the lineage can sometimes identify a connection that makes marriage unacceptable in the community. I know of a man who introduced his girlfriend to his family, only for his father to discover that she came from his grandmother’s lineage. The relationship could not continue. This is why I believe people should ask questions about family background early in a relationship and respect the customs that guide their communities.
